GEAR GUIDE || Eleven Picks for Fall on the Denver South Platte

Ivan Orsic / Oct 20, 2020

With cooler air temperatures and low fall flows, many people would assume that carp can't be caught on the fly as we progress through fall. "Au contraire", our friends. There's still plenty of good fishing to be had along the Denver South Platte through fall. Changing your timing and tactics are key, as is keeping your appearance a little more....understated.

With that in mind, we've put together a collection of gear that will help you get ready to target tailers in the Denver South Platte.

UMPQUA ZS2 Loaded Wader Belt

You don't need much more than a box of flies, some tippet, a net, and some water to get after some DSP carp and it's hard to beat the modular lumbar belt from Umpqua. The ZS2 Wader Belt is the foundation for a completely customizable lumbar fishing system and this kit includes 4 key accessories. Beyond a wader belt, this belt provides back support and has a die-cut molle face that allows custom placement/attachment of a wide range of critical accessories.

Nautilus X Series Fly Reel

You need stopping power to stop a big DSP carp. NEED IT! The Nautilus X-Series has it. It's also got a super smooth drag, huge arbor, and it's super lightweight. If you're looking for a versatile reel for the DSP and beyond, it's hard to beat the X-Series.

Staff Picked Flies

With two carping legends on staff (Rick Mikesell & Barry Reynolds), we've got you covered for carp bugs for this shoulder season. These two have been chasing carp on the DSP for years and have countless successful presentations under their belt. Suffice it to say, we'll pick some good bugs out for your next trip to chase urban carp.

SIMMS Solarflex Hoody - Riparian Camo

When fishing the low water of fall, you need to blend in. The all-new Riparian Camo does the trick and gives you the advantage of proximity to put a proper drag-and-drop presentation on that picky DSP carp. Combo that camo with sun protection and a hoody and you've got yourself a winner.

Simms Trout Icon Trucker

You've got your Riparian camo on, you should probably keep it earthy with your headwear. Might we suggest the SIMMS Trout Icon Trucker.

G Loomis Asquith Fly Rod

Now, the Asquith has a huge price tag. But, with that huge price tag comes unmatched performance, durability, and technology. We understand that you might not get the Asquith just for carp. But, a seven weight would do perfectly for the DSP, throwing streamers out of the boat, and for a little light saltwater duty.

Simms Superlight Pant

Wet wading is still a possibility on the Front Range and the quick-drying SIMMS Superlight Pants are a great option this time of year.

Scientific Anglers Amplitude MPX Fly Line

You're not going to be making a ton of long shots at these picky urban carp. Instead, you'll need a line that loads your rod in close and the shorter head of the MPX does just that. The Amplitude MPX line features the revolutionary AST PLUS slickness additive, making it easier to make a quick and effective presentation on the water.

Umpqua HD Large Fly Box

FlyTrapTM High Capacity Storage with TPE 3-D Molded High-Grip Inserts makes the HD (Heavy Duty) the go to choice for maximum storage in a waterproof design. The see-through lids and magnetic swing leaf inserts will keep you organized while planning your trip while the Class 3 water resistance and bombproof construction will keep your flies safe on the river.

Scientific Anglers Absolute Fluorocarbon Trout Tippet

Scientific Anglers Absolute fluorocarbon leaders and tippet boast a 15% higher wet knot strength compared to our previous material and features incredible clarity and abrasion resistance. We wouldn't use 7X....that's just the default product photo.
