Trouts Fly Fishing Forecast | July 2nd Edition

Ivan Orsic / Jul 2, 2021

If the following list doesn't get you excited to fish...welp, we don't know what to tell you. Golden stones, terrestrials, green drakes, yellow sallies, caddis, pale morning duns (PMDs), callibaetis, damselflies, chironomids, blue-winged olives (BWOs), and midges. That's a very cool list whether you're headed to the river or hitting one of your favorite stillwaters. It's one of the most wonderful times of the year and fish that find cool, clean water will be happily gorging themselves as the summer hatches continue into July. That variety can be a gift and a curse. It's important to stay tuned into your surroundings as multiple hatches might be going off throughout the day and what fish are tuned into can and will change. Be ready to change it up if fishing slows.

We would like to encourage anglers to give the Colorado River from the lower to the upper sections a break. We're seeing seasonally lower than normal flows and consistently elevated water temperatures above 67°F. While we haven't heard or seen any elevated water temperatures along the Eagle or the Arkansas flows are still lower than normal. Carry a thermometer and use it liberally as we progress through July. For more information on how to measure water temperature and when to give fish a break, check out this post from our archives. As a general rule, 67°F is a great cutoff to give trout a break and let them hunker down and find a consistent source of cool water.
