Fly Fishing Report: The South Platte River July 30th

Ivan Orsic / Jul 30, 2013

The summer monsoon season has given much of Colorado a break with cooler weather and sporadic rain events across the state. This is good news as it has dropped the water temperatures in many of the more popular rivers.

Dam fed tailwaters will continue to be great fly fishing options and the South Platte River near Deckers proves to be no exception.

We’ve had a number of guided fly fishing trips on the South Platte River over the past week and here are a few of the highlights:

· Recent weather and temperature: 60s and low 70s, cloudy

· Flows: flows bumped up and have stabilized below 200 in this section of the South Platte River

· Water Clarity: clear

· Natural insect activity: tricos, caddis, blue winged olives

· Effective fly patterns: Black RS2s (18-29), Everett’s Trico Spinners (20), Two-Bit Hookers (18), San Juan Worms, Parachute Adams (20), Rainbow Warrior (20) Juju Baetis (20)

· San Juan worms were working well given the higher flows and recent rain

Consistent storm patterns in the central Colorado Mountains are also cooling water temperatures as well. We have our fingers crossed that these weather patterns will continue through the month of August.
