Gear Guide // Twelve For Fall Hoppers

Ivan Orsic / Sep 8, 2021

While summer is slowly waning away to the months of fall it is important to remember to keep your small to medium-sized hoppers with you. In my opinion - and I am sure I am not alone when I say this - fall is one of the most underrated months to throw hoppers. Remember that those high elevation brookies still are eager to pack on some pounds and something akin to a Sweetgrass hopper will surely fit the ticket. And it's not just about the brookies here, it's about the browns and rainbows still held up by the cutbacks on the Dream, or among one of the many pocket waters at Deckers. While it is easy to sit here and type on about how simple tossing hoppers can be having the right gear with you is crucial to the whole situation. For this reason, I thought it would be a good idea to dive into twelve specific items to have with you the next time you go chasing various finned Salmos during the autumn months.

The Sweetgrass Hopper
Rod Set Up

Scott Centric Fly Rod

This rod is an absolute powerhouse and in terms of cars, should be everyone's daily driver. From heavy dry dropper rigs to articulated streamers this rod truly can do it all. More importantly, however, it does everything very well. Made here in Colorado, the Scott Centric should be your go-to rod all year-round and especially during the fall months.

Orvis Mirage LT Fly Reel

Earlier this week we mentioned the high quality that the mirage brings to the table when it comes to fly reels. For Colorado anglers, having a smooth drag is important, especially when many of us throw lighter tippets. And, when those summer months come to a close that is the name of the game. The Mirage LT is a fantastic reel to have with you and the quality and craftsmanship of the reel are more than enough to last a lifetime.

Scientific Anglers Mastery MPX Fly Line

If you are looking to round out your fly rod set up look no further than the MPX fly line. This fly line is a fantastic all-purpose line and the price won't break the bank.

Fishpond Tacky Double Haul Fly Box

If you have been searching for the "Do It All" fly box this fall, The Tacky Double Haul Fly Box is it. This box has the capacity to cover every situation you might come across during a long day on the river. With a massive 287 fly capacity, you’ll have plenty of room for a wide range of flies.

Loon Aquel

The Loon Aquel is one of the most consistent and clean gel floatants on the market. Aquel is long lasting, silicon based and won't melt when it's hot or harden when it's cold - perfect for Colorado. Furthermore, it masks human odor and won't leave any slick on even the calmest water.

Loon Top Ride

Known as "Shake and Bake" by world-class guides, this desiccant (drying agent) and powder floatant is fast and easy to use. A fly (still attached to the leader) goes in wet, and a few shakes later comes out dry and coated with a powder floatant. It is best practice to use this in tandem with Loon Aquel in order for your fly to float high all day long.
