The Arkansas River: Gold Medal Fly Fishing

Ivan Orsic / Feb 3, 2014

January was a really busy month for us here at Trouts. Somehow, we forgot to share this article about the fly fishing prospects on the Arkansas River and the new Gold Medal water designation. As always, Scott Willoughby from the Denver Post delivers a great piece talking about why this is important for the Arkansas as well as the State of Colorado. Here is a sound bite:

“After years of efforts to repair the impacts of mining pollution from the Leadville area near the Arkansas headwaters, CPW fisheries chief Greg Gerlich announced the designation of Gold Medal Trout Water for the 102-mile reach from the confluence with the Lake Fork of the Arkansas, near Leadville, downstream to Parkdale at the U.S. 50 bridge crossing above the Royal Gorge.”- Scott Willoughby and the Denver Post.

What does Gold Medal Water designation mean? Here is how the Colorado Parks and Wildlife defines it: “Gold Medal Waters are the highest quality cold-water habitats and have the capability to produce many quality size (14 inches or longer) trout. CPW has established criteria and management guide- lines to support the public interest in angling, observing and protecting these significant cold-water fishery resources.”

The Arkansas River now joins other prolific Colorado trout rivers such as the Gunnison River, Fryingpan River and certain sections of our home waters, the South Platte River.

It looks like another promising year is on tap for the Arkansas River. To read the entire Denver Post story CLICK HERE.
