Trouts Guide Spotlight: David Luna

Ivan Orsic / Jun 2, 2015

Trouts: Tell us a little about yourself, how long you’ve been fishing/fly-fishing and how you were introduced to the sport.

DL: I was 12 years old when I moved to Denver Colorado from the border town of Juarez Mexico, up until that day I had never seen a river besides the Rio Bravo (Rio Grande) and I doubt any trout would live in that stretch of the river anyway. I started fishing when I was14 years old, I use to spend the whole summer school break fishing dunking worms for bluegill, bass, and the occasional cat fish that would take my tasty treat. After doing that for a few years I was ready to expand my knowledge and in one of my outing to Waterton canyon where I saw a fly fisherman for the first time in my life was veryintrigued and I knew that I had to try this mad method. The first time that I fly fished I was 18 years old and 14 years later I'm still very much in love with the sport and is something that I'm very passionate about and hope to pass down to my children.

Trouts: Why do you love to guide fly-fishing?

DL: there are many reasons why I love to do this, I get to meet so many great people just about every day that choose to share their day with me in the water, sharing my knowledge of the sport and help people to enjoy their day even a little more is very rewarding to me.

Trouts: What is the best piece of fishing advice you’ve ever been given?

DL: The best piece of fishing advise that was ever given to me was given to me by my good friend Scott Spooner and that is to take a break look around and take in the scenery. Trout live in beautiful places!

Trouts: Describe your guiding style?

DL: I will have to say that im very adaptable to my clients from beginning to experienced anglers I love sharing my knowledge of the water, bugs and fish . My main goal is that my clients have a wonderful day in the water!

Trouts: Describe your perfect day on the water.

DL: The perfect day on the water for me is a day when the fish are active, hopefully sipping bugs on top and everyone is having a great time!

Trouts: Favorite species to target on the fly?

DL: by far Carp!!!

Trouts: Favorite place to fish?

DL: DSP (denver south platte)

Trouts: Destination to dream about?

DL: The Blackfoot River

Trouts: Got any fun fishing trips on the books?

DL: West Yellowstone in the fall

Trouts: What do you like to do for fun when not on the water?

DL: When I'm not on the water I find the most joy hanging out with my two wonderful kids Diego and Emma and my beautiful wife Alejandra, camping, hiking, and trying to get them to understand my passion and love of the sport.
