Trouts Proudly Welcomes Sam Sweeney to the Team!

Ivan Orsic / Aug 20, 2020

With the move to the new and bigger shop, there are a lot of new faces around the shop these days and we wanted to familiarize you with the new team members. Over the next couple of weeks, we'll be introducing some of the new and less familiar faces around the shop. Today, we're talking with our new Sales Associate - Sam Sweeney.

A Denver native, Sam Sweeney, has been fly fishing since he was a wee lad and loves tossing dry flies in high elevation meadow streams. If you've visited the shop over the past couple of months, chances are Sam's helped you navigate your way through the old and new shops. With all that in mind, we wanted to give you the opportunity to get to know Sam. Without further adieu, let's see what makes Mr. Sweeney tick on the water.

Trouts: Let's start this from the top- how did you get your start fly-fishing and what keeps you heading back to the river every chance you get?

SS: My mom used to compete in Super Fly competitions in the 90's, she taught me everything I know. When I was pretty young she put a fly rod in my hand, and I've been addicted ever since.

Trouts: Describe your perfect day on the water?

SS: My perfect day on the water is a healthy combination of dry fly and streamer eats, some cold beers, and a few friends.

Trouts: If you could only fish one fly in Colorado for the next 365 days, what would it be and why?

SS: I'd have to go Thin Mint size 6, because I can fish it in pretty much any river condition.

Trouts: Favorite place you've ever fished?

SS: Favorite place I've ever fished probably has to be Rio Pico Argentina because all those big fish weren't concerned about my bad drifts.

Trouts: Favorite river in Colorado?

SS: I don't have a single favorite river, but I love a good high elevation meadow stream.

Trouts: Destination to dream about?

SS: I've always wanted to throw some mice in Kamchatka.

Trouts: What is the best piece of fishing advice you've ever been given?

SF: A cool bit of advice I heard was a trout hook set should be the speed of light with an ounce of force

Trouts: When not fishing, what are we most likely to find you doing?

SF: When I'm not fishing you could find me climbing a fourteener, skiing in the winter, or watching the Avalanche.
