Who’s Fishing This Weekend!?

Ivan Orsic / Feb 17, 2016

I know it's only Wednesday but I just checked weather.com and things are looking awesome for the days to come. I couldn't help but make a quick blog post about it.

From Parshall to Hartsel, Deckers to Dotsero, there is zero reason to not be on the water this weekend. No matter where you head, look for temps to be anywhere from the 40's to 60's, the sun shining, and most importantly, the fish hungry.

We've had a handful of guide trips out lately- as well as many of us here at the shop getting some personal fishing days on the books- and not a single report of mediocre fishing has made it's way back to me.

There's been some pretty incredible midge activity lately on all the rivers I've gotten report from and the fish are taking notice. (Otherwise known as don't forget your dry fly box at home!) Other than that, your standard baetis/worm/egg/stonefly followed by something smaller off the back is sure to get the job done.

Focus on the softer perimeter water adjacent to the deep wintering holes and you should be in the game. Additionally, there have been a lot of fish starting to push up into the riffles (again, near the deep wintering holes) during these midday midge hatches.

I was on the Eagle the other day and found fish in shallow riffles from about 2-4pm. I've also heard the trout at both Deckers and the Dream Stream have been behaving much the same. Be sure to spend some time checking these areas this weekend during the warmer parts of the day.

I have to say, after a long winter of fishing and focusing on the slower/deeper stuff, it felt really darn good to see the fish getting happy enough to feed aggressively in this faster moving water. It would almost make you swear spring is right around the corner.....

Remember to leave the river in better condition than you found it and good luck out there!

As always, if there's anything we can do to make your time on the water more enjoyable and productive please let us know! There's nothing we love more than helping our customers find the success they're looking for on the water.

Needing to get stocked up for an upcoming trip this weekend? Don't forget about our Fly Happy Hour. Swing on by any Thursday or Friday from 4pm-close and enjoy $.50 off all flies and 10% off terminal tackle, tying materials and fly lines!

For now though, enjoy some recent photos from a few of our guide trips and personal fishing outings!
