Winter Fly Fishing Report: The South Platte River

Ivan Orsic / Dec 23, 2013

Trouts Guide Service operates twelve months out of the year and we’re available just about every day of each season. Fly fishing in December can be cold and sometimes tricky but one big upside to fly fishing in the winter additional solitude you get on the water. On our last client trip we visited the main stem of the South Platte River near Deckers.

Flows on this section of the river have been hovering right around 100 CFS and the water is very clear. On the day we fished the water was right at 105 CFS. The weather warm for December – 48 degrees was the high with little cloud cover. Given the relatively low flows and sun being out most of the day, we took advantage of the good light and spent a majority of our time sight fishing – finding actively feeding fish in their winter feeding lanes.

The morning fished extremely well with fish eating a variety of midge and egg patterns. In the afternoon there was a sparse midge hatch, but we never saw fish rising. Patterns that were particularly effective included: egg patterns, Juju baetis sz. 22, Rojo Midge sz.20, Cheesman Emerger sz 22, Top Secret midge sz. 18-20.

As the day went on the fishing got a little tough and fish seemed to slow down a bit, but ebbs and flows in fish actively feeding is not a big surprise for these winter months. When it is on… it is on…
